I though you might be interested in my perspective on this day.
As you all know, I discovered the (vast) field of Energy and Resources at UC Berkeley when I was finishing my undergrad studies in Sociology. The three classes I took at ERG made me understand the intimate relationship between the environment and individual and societal behavior - which I feel very passionate about.
Last year I transferred to San Jose State as a graduate student in the Environmental Studies program. There, I’m discovering how humans shape planet Earth, sometimes with great, sometimes with poor outputs. I’m also learning how each human decision is a difficult choice when it comes to protecting the fragile equilibrium of our environment while improving our daily life.

Yesterday, during a short day at Stanford, I discovered how the combined power of businesses and politics is going to help the environmental cause. As the climate change crisis is now a globally recognized issue, politicians and businesses are willing to embark on this new, “trendy” cause to expand their power and insure their future.

Let me give you a few examples.
Yesterday, we were told by former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice that the US oil dependence did not really shape the United State foreign policy, but that it made strategic sense that the US diversify to other, more sustainable sources of energy in the near future. Do you see the contradiction? Well, watch the video below…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUyFV5H2kts

Dan Reicher (Google.org) – backed by representatives of Chevron and Shell – explained that the energy of the future is likely to depend on our drilling technology (!) since geothermal power plants could be designed almost everywhere in the world as soon as we master drilling up to 10km deep in the ground. Good news, oil giants do have a future…

Mark R. Pinto (Applied Materials) and Richard M. Swanson (SunPower) explained how solar panel technology was going to improve in the near future (650W single frame panels are on the way) and create a new giant market to upgrade almost every house and building. Only a few words about the impact of creating such new large-scale industrial capabilities, but nothing about mining silicon and other raw materials to achieve their master plan…

Linda Jackman (Oracle) and Andrew Tang (PG&E) focused their talk on the opportunities linked to a next generation “smart” grid: it will give individual consumers the opportunity to monitor and control their electricity consumption in real time, improve supply/demand management while allowing to cut PG&E workforce on the field…

Coming back on Caltrain with my bicycle, I thought that our world is really changing towards a better one, with more concerns to protect our environment: if the industry sees economic opportunities, change will happen fast. We just have to be the watchdogs of the upcoming changes!

For the coming weeks, I will collaborate with my city council members (Burlingame) to turn into actions the recently adopted Climate Change plan, and find a way to collect the data for my thesis (From Film to Digital, is the Local Photo Processing Industry more Sustainable). Also on my program, daily pre-tiny tot swim lesson with the twins (Laurice and Alexandre, 2 years and 8 months), long hours of painting (my house) and work on mastering the new photo technology called "Gigapan" to produce 200+ Mega pixels photographs.

Last thing: A great book for your summer "Cradle to Cradle" Remaking the Way We Make Things, by William Mc Donough and Michael Braungard. http://www.amazon.com/Cradle-Remaking-Way-Make-Things/dp/0865475873/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246425168&sr=8-1

Cheers, Benoit

Watch Condoleezza Rice speech on a video I posted on YouTube:

Part 1 (Energy and Its Role in International Policy):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUyFV5H2kts

Part 2 (About Kyoto and Copenhagen):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvwLyI0YKRg

Test for Envs 166 electronic hand out

This is a test...
here is the link to your new (and first) electronic hand out...

www.benoitdelaveau.com/OP_3_2009001.pdf

Victory, thanks to CFLs and LEDs - Victoire, vive les lampes fluo. et DEL

Hi again,
I promised you a follow-up regarding my last personal bet, reducing our regular 26 kWh / day by 50% only by optimizing our lightening system. Here we are, after 3 months of intense work: 16.5 kWh / day for the last 30 days! What is the benefit of such dramatic electricity savings? Well, in tern of money, given the average price of electricity ($0,15 per kWh), we save about $ 1.50 a day of $ 45 per month, or $ 550 per year. It is significant.
Given the fact that electricity production (especially from coal burning) is a major source of emissions of SO4 and NOx, molecules that are precursors for acid rain, and city smog, such improvement MUST be considered NOW everywhere in the world.
What are the financial costs? It took me a good 6 weeks to replace about 100 classic bulbs mostly by LED ones, and to replace the 15 electric switches that were dimmable, so not compatible with the new bulbs. The total cost is about $ 1,400.00 since LEDs are still very expensive especially those with the best light rendition. Savings on electricity bill will cover this investment in less than 3 years. It's in fact a very good return for any investment!
What are the human costs? Well, it is easy to notice that our house is not as well lighted as it was previously. We have to turn on more lights at night. But, when you replace a 75 watts conventional bulb with a 3 watts LED, you expect a difference... The fact is after intense negotiation with the whole family, the change is now integrated and accepted.
Morality of this concrete example: If the media were doing the job they are suppose to do, informing citizens to help them to decide, we would be aware of the dramatic consequences of electric production pollution (asthma for young children is cities, acid rains that destroy the whole ecosystem in some area...). It is important to protect ourselves to cut down our electricity needs. Technologies are now widely available; we just have to do it!

High Tech in Households Lighting - Ampoules électriques high-tech.

Since I studied lighting equipments back in the 80s at the Photography College, everything has changed:

Conventional bulbs (still the reference).
Pros: Cheap ($1-2), reliable, and people are comfortable with the light it produces. Fully dimmable.
Cons: High electric consumption (75W). Short lifetime (1-2 years)

Halogen bulbs
Pros: Powerful light stream. Energy efficient (50W). Fully dimmable.
Cons: multiple unit (light stream very focused). Short lifetime.

CFLs (fluorescent bulbs)
Pros: Cheap (now about $5), lifetime (5-10 years), energy efficient (10W)
Cons: Strange shapes, small delay when power on, quality of the light for the first generations. Not dimmable. Has to be recycled (mercury).

LEDs
Pros: Latest technology (still not mature), Highly efficient (1-5W), very long lifetime (10 years +)
Cons: No powerful bulbs, quality (color temperature) of light still problematic, not fully dimmable. No commercial distribution.

My goal is to reduce by January our energy bill by 50%, switching some of the bulbs to CFLs or LEDs where appropriate. It is possible in almost every households so why people don’t do it? The fact that choosing a bulb is now a complicated consumer act is slowing down the process… unfortunately. Do you see the (missing) link between communication, sociology and energy conservation?

Is Oil a Social Addiction? Oil combustion produces harmful emissions through our tailpipes, we all know that. Oil consumption has a huge geopolitical impact (ie: war in middle east), well, we all assume that.
On top of these reasons, gasoline production is the most harmful industry left in our modern economies since all heavy/dirty industries have been externalized in China or other developing countries. In California (Contra Costra County), the top 3 most harmful industrial sites for the environment are… 3 refineries (#1Tesoro, #2Chevron and #3Shell…). See http://www.epa.gov/tri/ .Typical pollutants from refineries are Ammonia, Sulfuric Acid, Mercury, lead, nickel and Benzene (a molecule that is associated with cancer risks). My guess is the situation is very similar around the world.
So… when are you going to switch to a hybrid car, or buy a smaller vehicle? The solution is also to use it less often, if possible.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://benoitdelaveau.blogspot.com/2007/11/is-oil-social-addition-le-ptrole-est-il.html' title='Is Oil a Social Addiction? Last week, in my 4 classes, we defined the word “development”.
In Sociology, we are currently reading Karl Marx, and his early writing on what make Humans a society (in opposite of a group of animals). For Marx, the true nature of Human – what makes Him unique and different than animal – is his ability to create, to innovate, to change his environment in order to fulfill his needs. Pursuing this goal, Humans are constantly evolving in their capability to work with more efficiency and to collaborate among themselves. In short, what defines human society is development.
In MassCom, we study the development of radio from its invention to these days. Radio is now one of the major media and its development has followed other big media. From a relatively affordable and open way to communicate, it is now a sector highly industrialized and concentrated, where big media corporation dominate. They sell their audience (us) to advertisers that want to reach our ears to sell us products that we often don’t need. Interesting example of Human development isn’t?
In my ERG100 class (Environment and Energy), Development is approached in economic terms. The question of the week – a very important one actually – was, “Are a given society energy needs directly proportional to its GNP per Capita?” Well, early models developed in the 40s and 50s demonstrate that, yes if we want to increase economic development we have to produce a proportional amount of energy, with all the meaning in term of green gas emissions. If these models are right, the coming industrial development of huge countries like China and India, would certainly accelerate so much Global Warming that in less that 25 years we could damage the whole planet climate system. Good news. Recently, scientists survey the ‘old Europe” countries as well as California, and it turns-out they demonstrate huge increases in energy efficiency production during the last 20 years. The optimistic view is that the developing world is going to explore directly the new and efficient ways of producing its energy while developing its economy. A nice example would be for African countries to switch from wood burning oven to solar electric ones, without having to use oil or gas. It’s all about development… I told you.
Last way to see about development, is simply to have a look to the graph I choose to illustrate these lines. This is the human population growth over the course of the planet history. See how the last centuries the human population exploded! Well, this is the main concern of my last class, Environmental Science, Policy and Management 167. Given the fact that human activity is the most dangerous cause of damage to our environment how are we going to manage such increase in the world population? 30% of the most popular infectious diseases come from our own urine and fecal rejections! We study last week how millions of people from African and Middle East were literally dying from well-known diseases just because they don’t have access to the technology of water treatment. In fact Marx was right, Human development (and human pop. Increase) is not possible without the tremendous capacity of Humans to transform and modify their environment. In other words, we need to expand the technological solutions the West found, globally in order to produce clean energy and safe water to everyone.

I’m a “GG” – Mon nouveau surnom “GG”

Tomorrow, I’m going to start the third week of the semester at UC Berkeley. As you know I have take very different classes there, from EP (Physical Education), American History, to Sociology and even Math (Statistics), but this semester is very special since I’m taking 4 classes from 4 different departments (Sociology, Mass Communication, Heath and Environment, and Energy and Development). What makes Berkeley such a fantastic learning environment is this environment where student fron almost every field you ca imagine share their experience on a day-to-day basis. Here is an example:
I was very surprised when, taking with my sociology classmate Samar, she said, “Wouah, Then you’re a real GG!!! That’s so WON-DER-FUL, I like that…”
Samar is a pretty and very active girl that is in her Freshman year. She should be in her 20s. I was little embarrassed to ask her what was a “GG”. She pause and explained “GG” stands for “Going Green”. The people with the GG attribute are so dedicated to the Green cause that they are able to turn their back to promising career in Business, Medicine, or Laws just because of their conviction… I smiled, Samar made my day…

Back to School 2007… Rentrée 2007…

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_uaH-cZaTHq8/RtXmKNCr_9I/AAAAAAAAAcg/MwgqOQU5-cY/s320/DSC_3653.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104238815668338642" />
I know… I’m starting my fifth year of my U.S studies. Yesterday, Prof. Retzinger started her lecture showing 2 clips about the American Dream. The first one is a TV ad for Bank of America, telling how this institution is supporting families and individuals to achieve their dreams. The second clip is an excerpt of the US Attorney general (Gonzalez) final discourse, who just resigned a few days ago. He greatly thanks America for alleviate him from a poor Mexican immigrant family to a powerful politician figure. How is the American Dream defined then in our mind? Is it trough commercials, or news? Is it a mix of the two? What happens when the messages are not identical? Who has really the power to change our mind?

Last Sociology class? - Ma derniére classe de Sociologie?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_uaH-cZaTHq8/RtXks9Cr_7I/AAAAAAAAAcQ/YcC9-0dQe5k/s320/2d_7.JPG.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104237213645537202" />

The second class I’m taking this semester in Sociology 101, by Prof. Riley. Soc 101 is a yearlong class I have to take to finish my BA in Sociology. As expected, Riley stated by defining the word Society. Societies are organized groups of people. Moreover, modern societies as ours, integrated individuals are pursuing personal well-being and personal interest, but who are totally interdependent. To build our individuality, we rely on others. A great example is to express ourselves with the outfit we like, we need first to win money with our work, and then found the products that fit our tastes produced by someone else. To summarize, our modern society shapes our individuality. We do, we wear, we think differently because of the world of exchange, trading, divisions of labor humans have create. The counter example? Think about wolf or any wild animals. They look, act, do almost exactly the same, day after day. It’s not a society as the great thinkers (Smith, Durkeim, Weber, Marx…) defined it.

My new focus: Environmental studies - Mes nouveaux cours sur l'environnement

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_uaH-cZaTHq8/RtXj_9Cr_6I/AAAAAAAAAcI/YqrgfSJx6TE/s320/C26P004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104236440551423906" />
On top of these 2 theory classes, as you may know I have decided to dedicate my work to the environment and to pursue a Master degree in Environmental studies, right after I would be done with my Ba(s). To get a sense of what it is, and also get to know how this field is taught, I’m enrolled this semester in 2 very exiting classes.
The first one is called Environmental Science, Policy and Management 167 (ESPM167). It is a class that focuses on the damages and the cost in human health produced by development and human activities. Examples are air pollution, climate change, and pesticide use… When a city, a society, even a family grew-up, the consequences are always negative on others, and nature. This class is based on a human science approach; sociology is the main way to investigate the field.
The second class illustrates the other way to approach the complex field of environment. It is going to teach me how to evaluate whet are the best options to chose from, in my daily life, but also at the societal and political level. Energy and Resources 100 is a class designed for Graduate student that presents the methods used to quantify the efficiency of some of the main solution to produce energy. How to calculate it’s real cost, its carbon footprint, its impact on environment. This class is a scientific class, based on math, physics, and… calculations.
I will update you on a regular basis… See you soon!

Navy

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_uaH-cZaTHq8/RtXJoNCr_5I/AAAAAAAAAcA/pOIbGWiql5o/s320/navy-ship-inside-large.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104207445227208594" />

Tuesday, May 23, 2006
A few years ago, France’s navy operated two sister plane-carriers ships, the “Foch” and the “Clemenceau”. The first one has been sold to Brazil, while the second one was supposed to be dismantled in Spain back to 1997. We are in 2006, and the boat is still alive, waiting for its faith in Toulon, France. In the mean time, the U.S Navy handles a similar situation the fast way. On May 17 2006, the "USS Oriskany" has been sunk on the Mexico gulf. Ne need for dismantle here, mother nature would take care of the giant. EPA officials who approved the move declare "its toxins will slowly leach out over the estimated 100 years it will take the carrier to rust away and should pose no danger to marine life"
